This paper discusses the arguments for orienting social science policy towards interdisciplinarity. We have selected three cases to illustrate the challenges of interpreting interdisciplinarity and suggested three areas for immediate action: (1) A shift of emphasis at undergraduate level from “discipline” to “scientific issue”; (2) Facilitation of licensing and evaluation options for interdisciplinary programs and research studies; and (3) Integration of representatives beyond the research community into the teams proposing and evaluating research projects.
