The study of the past has always fascinated people both because of the stories and because of the lessons it has taught us. This text underlies the tremendous importance the past has in understanding the present and in shaping the future, focusing on the role of the historian in the modern era. It also stresses the necessity to leave the study of history in the hands of specialists, who can offer insights into the past based on evidences, on the research of documents and data, and not on speculations.
