The necessity to evaluate the quality of researchers and their organizations led the physicist Hirsch to the idea of establishing an index with his name, the Hirsch index-h, in order to assess more precisely the value of the published results of a scientist. An overview of the historical development and positive and negative criticism of the h-index are presented.
