In this brief analysis we discuss the main components of the outdated paradigm that is still foundational for the Romanian higher education. Each component is critically presented and new modern alternatives are proposed. We argue that a new modern paradigm should (1) reconceptualize the meaning of higher education [e.g., to emphasize master and doctoral studies rather than only (mainly) undergraduate studies]; (2) offer clear evidence-based strategies for development and organization (e.g., when and how to create new competitive academic programs/structures); (3) propose supportive financial mechanisms; and (4) clarify the academic and social status of university professors (e.g., tenure track system, financial status/salary level).
