Studying Chemistry at university level begins in Bucharest in the year 1863, at the Faculty of Sciences. In 1864, during the reign of the union ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the University of Bucharest is founded through his royal decree, integrating the Faculty of Sciences. Throughout Europe, these times are characterized by political as well as scientific effervescence. In the newly formed state, there is an echo to all things. Chemistry experiences a genuine Odyssey. Its own challenges, added to the challenges of the political times, reinforce it and grant it the required flexibility. As a science of dichotomies and of binary logic, Chemistry tends to fill in the little spaces and so to become continuous on the different intervals of scientific knowledge. Apart from the endeavour to educate generations of chemists, the Faculty of Chemistry brings about more coherence to its educational mission as well as to the mission of scientific research.
