We give some arguments in favor of the important impact given by the Romanian Mathematical Competitions during the more than 110 years of existence, to the Romanian mathematical research. A particular attention is given to the International Mathematical Olympiads invented by the Romanian Mathematical Society in 1959. The present paper is a written version of the talk given by the second author at the 7th Congress of the World Federation for International Mathematical Competitions held in Barranquilla, Colombia, in July 2014.
