This article is a recall of the evolution of ”Biological chemistry” towards ”Biochemistry” in Romania. Eugen Macovschi’s personality as a Professor of Biochemistry at Bucharest University, member of the Romanian Academy and creator of the first Romanian Institute of Biochemistry is presented. His main scientific achievements along with the new concept on the living matter biostructure are described. Under his directorship, Eugen Macovschi initiated several new research directions in Romania, such as biochemistry of the muscle contraction, immunochemistry, enzymology, nucleic acids research and plant biochemistry.
