abstract ={ Professor Aurel Avramescu (1903–1985) was born in Radna, Romania, and graduated as an electrical engineer in Dresden, Germany, where he had also obtained the Ph. D. degree. After returning to Bucharest, he was instrumental in the modernization of Romania’s telegraph and telex networks. He was President of the Romanian Committee for Automation, and published about 150 research papers in the fields of electricity and automatics. After publishing in 1960 a 560-page monograph on scientific documentation, he became the General Manager of the Romanian Academy’s Center for Scientific Documentation. By using higher
mathematics and analogies with laws of heat transfer in thermodynamics or of optical phenomena, he could bring proofs for empirical laws in scientometrics found by Lotka, Zipf, and Bradford. His name is also associated with finding mathematical relationships for the growth and obsolescence of scientific citations. },
